Our younger two girls like bringing home these little non-eyecatching pale-greenish flowers.  ([livejournal.com profile] cymrullewes says sort of dogwood-ish.)  They have a little spiky seed pod in the center that's pointy from just about every angle.  After it's been picked a few days, detached from the flower, starting to dry out well and left lying on the floor, it's as hard as wood, and about the size and shape of a small spiky marble.

I know of this because I just stepped down from the bottom stair directly onto one.  It was right under the middle toes of my left foot ... you know, the one that can't tolerate localized pressure or having its toes bent upward?  I'm not exaggerating about vegetable caltrops; [livejournal.com profile] cymrullewes will doubtless testify as to the resulting scream of pain.

I'm going to sit at my desk and whimper for a bit now, until my foot calms down enough to walk on again.

ouch.

my cat, max, has this great new habit wherein he finds where I have hidden the pin cushion and somehow manages to get the pins out and scattered evenly all over the floor of my entire condo.

Oh, that's a good one.

My cat Figaro broke a glass on the floor between me and the door once. I'd just had eye surgery and couldn't see worth a darn. I was barefoot, and the room was dark. I tell you, that kind of evil takes planning.

Not that I'm saying your kids are evil, Alaric. Just cats.

especially cats.

Have either of you seen the Eddie Izzard skit where he talks about how "that's not purring that you hear, it's drilling"? He then goes on to do a cat version of The Great Escape.

Brilliant.

If you aren't familiar with it, just picture the cat behind the couch with a jackhammer wearing eye protection trying to tunnel his way out.

Evil, I don't think I'd buy for either.

Diabolical, now .........

Bah. I've met Alaric's kids... Trust me, they take after their father in cunning and madness... ;)

In fact, even the one that isn't his seems to have picked it up. :)

But you haven't. Wen wasn't born the last time I saw you. Unless you are counting the one that isn't his as his. :-) Come visit.

Oh. Well, I met the other one, then. :)

And I promise I will visit as soon as I can. But you're 2300 miles away. It's not exactly a day trip, even for me. But you'll be my first stop on my East Coast Tour. ;)

I'll stop nagging about it then. I'll let Alaric start bugging you about when that Tour starts. :-)

Owowouch. And why is it that it's always in the one place and under the one foot that it will hurt the most (says the person who has broken the right foot THREE times now).

Has this anything to do with starting the day off on the wrong foot?

I don't know about that, but it certainly has something to do with finishing it on the other one.

and yet another reason why all plants should be destroyed!
