I've been lamenting for some time that my VXA1 tape drive, with its 33GB native (i.e, uncompressed) capacity and 3MB/s transfer rate that seemed so huge and fast when I got it, is no longer really big enough or fast enough for my needs, especially now that minbar just got its disk array upgraded to almost 400GB of RAID5.  By chance, I happened to mention this to one of the other Bacula developers late last night.

As a result of this chance mention, I 've been offered a free LTO1 external tape drive.  He just had it sitting around not doing anything with it.  (For those not familiar with LTO, that's 100GB native capacity and 15MB/s transfer rate.)

Ask, and sometimes, ye shall receive.

"one of the other Bacula developers"
are you a Bacula developer as well?

A lesser one ... I've gotten out of touch in the course of six months away from my Unix desktops, and my Gnome installation actually is not current enough to run the gnome2 console of the current version, so right now I'm a bit between a rock and a hard place until I reinstall this machine with a current distribution.

'reinstall with a current distribution'

dude, that's what Debian + Unstable tree is for

I've always got the latest distribution, 40-80mb's per day of software updates from a selection of 18,000 packages

I was thinking Gentoo, actually. I don't get along well with Debian -- too much indirection.
