This is the standard problem with the (nominally) free market. Once you get big enough, you begin to lobby the government to warp the rules of your market in your favor.
This is why anti-trust/anti-monopoly laws and an enforcement bureau must exist.
Bah. More government isn't the answer. We just need to start shooting politicians who abuse their position of authority and grant legal favors to private entities.
Them, you just tar and feather and ride out of town on a rail. They're not betraying a trust, they're just being a little too greedy about doing their jobs.

I will say, however, that you might not have to work very hard to convince me that their temptors deserve that fate as well.
