As in, "Things Assorted."  (At least, that's what I was once told it translated to.  I'm not sure that's correct, because my understanding is that 'chop' translates to something like 'quickly', as in 'chopsticks' -> 'fii jii' -> 'quick sticks'.)

So, this evening's Things:

  • We stopped by the local Indian grocery store, from whom we procured such things as papadum, gram flour, gulabjamun, frozen poori, and tamarind chutney.
  • We found the Russian grocery in town, from whom we procured smetana and kefir.
  • And, I'm working on a new Callahan's Place photo page, since Donovan took his down something over a year ago now.  Long-term, I'll probably have to place it on co.ordinate.org, because Verizon, may their toenails rot and fall off, blocks incoming traffic to ports 80 and 443.
  • And oh yeah, my left foot hurts like fuck.  But that's no news.
  • Almost forgot ... we picked up a copy of Half-Blood Prince at Shaws for $12 off retail.

Oh yes... tea!  Must go order good-quality tea....

Tess has also started a new photo page: http://gallery.gundo.com/gallery/Callahans

Ah ... News of this had not reached the Freenode side. I've been trying to make it look a little more visually interesting, more a wall of portraits rather than "just another sterile web photo gallery".

I think that would be really neat. I still have yet to come up with a photo that's a good representation of me since I got my hair cut. It's a pretty drastic change, so I didn't want to use an older one even though there are some good ones.

While under development, the new page is here (http://www.babcom.com:81/alaric/frames/). It's on port 81 because Verizon blocks incoming traffic to port 80 on residential DSL service, and we're stuck with Verizon untiul we move again because we're on an RSU to which they refuse to allow any other provider access. Once it goes "live", I'll probably move it to co.ordinate.org (http://co.ordinate.org/).

I wasn't able to access that URL, but I'm looking forward to seeing it when you're done. It's always nice to be able to associate names and faces, and you'll have some from Freenode that aren't familiar to me.

Oh, yeah, P.S. If you get a photo page posted, let me know and I'll link to it from the Undernet #callahans web page.

I'll try to remember to let you know as soon as it's Ready For Prime Time.

What do you consider to be quality tea?

Specifically, I'm looking for FTGFOP Darjeeling teas from a number of specific estates -- Castleton, Makaibari, Upper Namring, Margaret's Hope, Jungpana among others. My normal source of such, Leaves Pure Teas (http://www.leaves.com), is notably short on stock right now and has virtually none of any of the above, but it looks as though I can get most of what I want from Plymouth Tea (http://www.plymouthtea.com/) (and possibly even at better prices). Tea Time (http://store.tea-time.com/) also seems to have a good selection of Darjeelings, including the Upper Namring and the Makaibari, but they appear to be more expensive (got to pay the rent on that Palo Alto storefront, I guess). [livejournal.com profile] cymrullewes also wants some Russian caravan tea.

I believe that "chop" actually translates to "food". Chopsticks are food-eating implements.

This leads to one of the more amusing cross-cultural puns... I never eat at any place that advertises chop suey, because they serve Pig Food.

hrm, thoughts

- isn't chop suey supposed to be a western invention anyway? not in the least bit traditional chinese food , but something that got put together by western cooks doing 'chinese food'

chopsticks/quicksticks, hrm.... have to look in to that one. Gives new evidence to the usage of 'Chop Chop!' as synonym for 'hurry up!'

That's about the size of it, yes.

Urm, the way I heard it was that Chop Suey was invented in San Francisco as a way to quickly feed hungery Chinese miners. Whether it was invented by Western cooks or not, I do not know.
