I've been boycotting Worst Buy for 4 years now... since we bought a new washer and dryer from them, the delivery guys *dragged* the hose along the driveway, scraping a hole into it, set it up anyways, "tested" it, thereby flooding my laundry room, came and told ME that they had flooded my laundry room and that I'd have to clean it up, then told me that they couldn't get back with a replacement part for a week and a half and that they would have to charge me for it, because clearly, the hose had been fine when they brought it...!!!
We ended up driving to their parts warehouse, picking up a new hose, installing it ourselves, and resolving never to do business with them again.
btw... when confronted with a similar "but we have to have your name and address" at a different retailer, my solution was to say "fine... that's Jane Doe, spelled D-O-E, at 1234 Main Street, Denver CO 80202" the late-teens cashier/clerk actually snorked as he typed it in... and said "well, if you say so, then it must be true, and since the computer accepted it, we're good to go!"
I stopped to buy donuts for the office at Safeway, one morning a couple years ago. The droid asked for my "discount" card. I said "I don't do demographics." The droid said they had to have a card to sell me the box of donuts and pushed an application at me. I said "I guess I don't need these donuts, then," and left them at the checkout counter. I haven't been back, since.
Best Buy is one of six or seven chains in the Columbus area that has been doing this for awhile. I didn't mind too much when they asked for zip codes, but they ask for my phone number when I purchase a dvd or cd with cash.
I generally just give them the local business number of one of the other chains that asks for phone numbers.
