My left little toe has been extremely painful again for several days now.  I've been unable to keep a shoe on for more than a few minutes at a time today.  The distal phalanx[1] of the toe, no longer rigidly attached to the medial phalanx[2] since the last surgery (which removed some bone in efforts to reduce the pain from that toe), is pulling sideways off the end of the toe towards my other toes, while the medial phalanx is increasingly pointing outward away from the rest of the foot.

I have a feeling I'm going to have no choice but to have that toe amputated altogether.  It's not contributing anything to my balance, and it's harming my mobility overall because of the pain.  It even keeps me awake at night if I lie on that side.

[1]  That's "the end bone of the toe."

[2]  That's right, the next bone, "the middle toe-bone" ....

Sounds like it. All the things you might do to make it less painful would probably make it more in the way, and if it's not contributing, anyway..

I gotta big, sharp wood chisel and a whole milk crate full of hammers. ;)

I really should not read my friendsfriends page when bored...

I should knit! or read or something.

I personally think there's something wrong with people who have perfectly good, functional body parts like toes, fingers, thumbs, removed just because they feel like it. Body decoration is one thing, but maiming yourself to prove your individuality is pretty stupid.

No disagreement here. But it is rather like the science fiction books we read where one can change one's form at any time and in any manner. Some people aren't willing to wait and they don't care if it isn't reversible.

So how do we go about finding a doctor to perform it? I'd prefer it if you could come back here and like Ciccinelli do it. But then perhaps not. He was the one who took out the bits of bone.

Wait until he has insurance, let me whack it off, have A. go into the emergency room... "I dropped something on my foot. I couldn't find the other bit. please sew this up?"

Ok, probably not the best idea.

Uh, yeah, I think as an exeriment in body modification, it's lacking something. Pain medication, for instance; I suspect that approach would hurt like a mother....

I've got this bottle of Macallan...

Damn dear. I would have thought you would hold out for Bruichladdich.
Sunday, March 13th, 2005 10:37 pm (UTC)
Not for that purpose .... it'd be a sin to drink that much Bruichladdich that fast.

Dude. Whatta waste of good Macallan. You gonna do that, use the cheap shit, like Jim Beam or Dickel....

Save the Macallan for something worth drinking it for. Like a wedding or a wake or your first million.

I'm not actually that much of a fan of alcohol for the purpose of anaesthesia anyway. :) If anything, I'd buy a bottle of cheap vodka and use it to sterilize the wound area before and after.

I think "My first amputation" is a pretty good reason to toast with the good stuff... ;)

Maybe two weeks after the fact, when you're sure the surgeon hasn't given you sepsis... :)

True, but that doesn't mean she can prescribe.

Not forgetting at all. I just know exactly how far that'll get me. Basically, it'd make sure we had lots of antibiotics on hand. And maybe a bottle of tetanus vaccine, and some snakebite anti-venom. ;)
