SO this was first supposed to be posted Monday.  Then I was at work until about 8 on Monday and by the time I bought groceries for the semi-surprise pot luck (it was supposed to be announced, but no-one got the mail) on Tuesday, got home and made supper, it slipped my mind.  Then I intended to post it Tuesday but, well, Tuesday evening has kinda sucked, because ... well, there's good bits and bad bits.  The good bit is, all the stuff [livejournal.com profile] cymrullewes shipped me arrived, as well as my Amazon.com order with my long-lusted-after Argonath bookends.  The bad news is, part of that shipment was whitestar, my gamebox, and UPS wrecked it.  The case is smashed, the heatsink broke loose and flailed around inside the case and broke things off the motherboard, and the video card may have been damaged beyond the visible bent bracket (which I was able to straighten).  I don't know yet whether the CPU and RAM survived intact.  The RAM had heatsink compound smeared on it, which probably shouldn't do any harm as long as it didn't short anything.  I'm hoping I can talk Fry's into testing the CPU, RAM and GPU for me on the probable sale of a new case and motherboard.  (I'd like to take the opportunity to go Athlon64 and reincarnate whitestar as, say, vorlon, but I can't spare the money.  I won't know for sure whether I can spare the money just to repair it, right now, until I have a tally of what I need to replace.  With luck, I can get away with just a new case and motherboard, but if the CPU or video card is dead as well, I'll have to wait anyway so I may as well go Athlon64.)

But I am digressing shamefully.  The intent of this post was not to gripe about UPS destroying my gamebox, but to announce an apartment-warming, to occur this Saturday, January 22.  I'll make directions available later for those interested in attending (if you plan on showing up, please let me know in advance).  I will be making rice, bento beef, and most likely teahouse chicken wings; if there's anything specific you want to eat or drink, better bring it, because I'm not well stocked on snacks or beverages yet.  I'm not going to set a specific start time; feel free to show up any time after about 10 in the morning.  (I'm fairly sure I posted the address here previously, ... hmm ... however, evidence appears to indicate to the contrary.  Well, address will be provided along with directions to those who email me expressing interest in attending; how's that?)

There probably doesn't have to be any specific shutdown time either, except since this is an apartment complex, we'll have to keep the noise down after about 10 or so.  There's even a futon for crash space, should anyone require it.  There is CD-based music capability, either prerecorded or MP3; there is wireless net (though you'll need a WPA-capable NIC) and limited wired net.

Nothing else springs to mind to me right now; if you think of something I've missed, poke me.

Oh yeah, [livejournal.com profile] echristo, I have several loaner kitchen appliances and [livejournal.com profile] darkstormangel's Corningware crock here to return to you at the next opportunity.

They don't call'em Ooops for nothing. *sigh* Wish I could be there for the warming... damn the TSA goons back to hell...

Yeah, UPS is notoriously unkind to packages. I simply refuse to have them ship anything fragile anymore.

Cheapest place in town other than the post office and we've had very good success with them before. :-/

Well, you could drop by Saturday, or I could bring the Box O'Stuff with me tomorrow or Friday and either drop it off or meet up with you someplace.

Unfortunately it looks like I've got plans most of Saturday, I may be able to drop by, or we can meet up some other time. No rush. :)

I'll be there around noon. I have to drop off mail for my transit watchdog group (http://www.vtaridersunion.org/) in Mountain View. Anything for the new apartment you need? I just need the directions to your new pad (again). See ya on Saturday.

Your remembered LJ address update was actually done in email. So, yes, you sent out your new address. Just not here... ;-)

I might show up in the afternoon. That day is free at the moment.

No. He did put his address in a comment. That's how I got it to ship his boxes of stuff.

When Jana worked at UPS, loading trucks, she told some amazing stories of what routinely happened on the sorting floor. Ever see the old American Tourister luggage ad with the gorillas? Those gorillas are nothing compared to UPS personnel.

I'd love to be there, but I'm waiting on parts for the transporter (you know how it is). Raise a glass for me, yeah?
