I think 2peculiar may have nailed a good part of it. Again, I do not find this a cheerful concept: the victory of the small-minded, the self-centered, the fearful, the xenophobic.

The half of the country's population, plus three million, who voted for Bush are spread over upwards of 80% of the land area of this country. That's not suburbanite, that's rural.
Go look at the county rolls. Generally, urban and suburban counties went liberal, rural counties went Bush.
