An article published by SFGate today details how the US Army sprayed the San Francisco Bay Area with the bacterium serratia marcescens in 1950, and didn't tell anyone.  It is now believed that the experiment may have permanently altered the microbiological climate of the Bay Area.

I dunno if you caught the implications of the last bit on the SFGate article, but basically it's pinning this years "flu vaccine crisis" on this event.

Well, they're blaming it on serratia marcescens, anyway. It was not clear to me that they were making any attempt to blame it on the specific incident, considering that the vaccine is -- or was -- being manufactured in Liverpool, UK.
