Specifically, the left foot.  I saw the podiatrist about my painful little toe today.  The result for today is a hefty cortisone shot in the toe to reduce swelling and inflammation, and I'm to wait three to four weeks and see how it goes.  Hopefully this will solve the problem without any further surgey, and I'll be able to get my motorcycle boots on again.  The podiatrists I've been going to have a shoe-stretching device, but my boots (Frey-Daytona Security Evos) are dual-boot construction with an inner armored boot made of Kevlar and carbon-fiber.  (See photo at right.)  Somehow I don't think the shoe-stretcher is very likely to work on them.

I'll probably have to replace the boots with a larger size sometime, but not right now -- we don't have $800 to spare, which is what they cost in the first place.

(By the way:  Frey-Daytona boots rock massive amounts of ass.  Made in Germany, they are available in the US from Helimot in San Jose, the sole US Frey-Daytona importer, and in the UK from Tony's of Prestatyn and GLF Accessories.  Check them out.  And if you buy from Helimot, say hi to Helmut for me.)

Ok, they're cool, but will they come up to my knees?

And can I get them with stainless steel plates on the shins? ;)

Mine have additional dual-density foam on the shins, added at my request by Helimot. No, they're not knee-tall, and putting stainless steel plates on the shins might pose a problem with the outer boot zipper, which runs diagonally down and around from the inner calf, across the bottom of the shin, to the outside of the foot.

Extendint the outer boot probably wouldn't be that difficult, though. And I guess you could always fabricate a set of knee-tall greaves to wear over the top of them. :)

Do you need your little toe? The fucker sounds like it's more trouble than it could possibly be worth. Maybe you should just chop that sucker off.

Just think, you could wear narrower shoes...

Believe me, the thought has crossed my mind. It's not like it's really contributing anything at this point. All the toes on my RIGHT foot are functional, to the point that if I'm barefoot I can hold and manipulate things with my toes -- but at thhis point, the toes on the left foot might as well be made of wood for all I can move them voluntarily. (And the big toe doesn't move at all -- it was fused three surgeries ago.)

there are hockey skates these days that are made of similar materials in similar ways and they can be stretched and fitted.

Oh really? Hmmmmmm. I'm surprised. I'd have thought it too rigid to be stretchable without breaking it down.

I guess I'll have to check it out. ANy recommendations?

it's unlikely a skate shop will be hip to the similarities or differences in specific. suggest lots of reading at Mission and Bauer and CCM sites so you know them. honestly, i'm guessing :) have a read.
