Newly discovered Diebold weakness: The vote-summary software on Diebold machines can be hacked in Visual Basic, and the machine won't know it -- because it only tracks data changes that occur within the GEMS software.  Any external program placed on the machine can manipulate the data with impunity.

Jeez, that must hurt. To be vulnerable to hacking is one thing; to be vulnerable to a hack written in Visual Basic--I feel sorry for the people who wrote Diebold's software.

But you must not have read the whole story. On page three, it says: "Diebold spokesman David Bear said by phone that no one would risk manipulating votes in an election because it's against the law and carries a heavy penalty."

See? Nothing to worry about!

If only no one would risk writing shit voting software because it was against the law and carried a heavy penalty.

Not too late to get an absentee ballot, you know.
