I have made the discovery that if I wear my night splint (which is lighter and more flexible) instead of the surgical boot, I can get around the house using just my cane for support instead of my crutches.  I'm still going to need crutches and the surgical boot when we go out, because the night splint is definitely an indoor-use-only item, but this is a step forward.
