I suspect I've gotten bitten enough by the local mosquitoes to become sensitized to them.  I got bitten on my right thigh two days ago; now I have a red swelling there almost three inches across that I'm having to use xylocaine jelly on to control the itching, and I feel like hell.  (Last night it was two inches.)

What the hell beneficial purpose do mosquitoes serve, anyway, other than food for their predators?

Surprisingly, I've not been bit yet this year, even though I'm eating a lot of carbs (i.e. not on the edge of ketosis, which the bugs seem to hate). Either all the B vitamins are doing it ... or this is one of the few nice side effects of chemo!

Maybe I should double up my B-complex ... I've already doubled up my calcium-magnesium because I've been having a fair few chest pains lately.
(Before you ask, no, no other cardiac symptoms, and I have a history of non-cardiac chest-wall pain which magnesium supplements seem to control.)

Making a few animals sick enough that other predators can bring them down?

They're pretty useful from the point of view of various bacteria and virii. Just not from the point of view of the human virus :)
