this might sound cold hearted . . .
In a nutshell - it's at least possible that doing research has become so lucrative that the incentive to actually cure diseases has been lost. It's not so well known, but a documented fact, that the AMA's own charter says it exists to "guarantee the profitability of the practice of medicine" within the USA. If there was no profit to doing the research, but the pharma companies were allowed to profit off of working products brought to market, we might see a dramatic increase in the number of products being brought to market that actually cure diseases. Just a guess.
