presumably she is in a joyful state of "submission."

Not too joyful, apparently....

So who gets the 72 virgins in this case?

dammifino. But I have a sneaking suspicion — mind you, I could be going out on a limb here — that having your head cut off on video by the Faithful of Allah doesn't qualify as martyrdom in the service of Allah.

I don't quote Dr. Phil often, but there's one quote of his that is absolute wisdom, and pretty well fits here:

You choose your consequences.

The other quote I think works here is (not from Dr. Phil):

You die by the code you live by.

"... now holding her for $2 million ransom ..."

Who'd pay it? She'd just consider herself a successful fundraiser and go back again.

Well, apparently she's been in captivity three months now and nobody's even making an effort to come up with any money. Funny how celebrating when jihadists kill soldiers from a force your own country is contributing troops to doesn't win you many friends.

I wonder what the Karmic retribution is for dancing on somebody else's grave... even a misguided fool's grave... and even if she isn't yet dead. Might it not have something to do with grey silk argyle socks? Or perhaps even more severe pedal extremities...

But no doubt I am over-reacting.

I'm very sorry, Alaric. I like you, a lot, but this little part of you is something I don't like, and I don't understand.

It's the sheer stupidity. This woman threw in her lot with people who slaughter innocents as a matter of policy, who treat women worse than they treat dogs, and she expected them to greet her with fluffy-bunny open arms. Now she's horrified and aghast that they didn't hail her as the herald of the 12th Imam, and unfortunately for her, it looks as though her poor judgment is going to cost her her life.

I don't for one moment think that cutting her head off is the right thing for her captors to do. It's a brutal murder however you look at it. But I boggle at the sheer naïvete that led her to seek out such a fate. It's not as though they haven't already publicly murdered plenty of Western women just like her. Did she really think she would be any different? Did they think she'd care that she put up a web site? The way the Taliban think, she's committing a crime against Allah by the simple fact of being educated enough to do so.

I wonder at the mindset that it takes to look at a cold-blooded killer or mass murderer and decide that, the facts, the record, and his own admission — or boasts — notwithstanding, he can't possibly be a bad person. It's like all the women holding vigils outside the prison that held Ted Bundy. I don't remember exactly how many offers of marriage he received in the mail while in prison awaiting execution for serial murder, but there were several. Bin Laden publicly claimed responsibility for 9/11; if she looked at him and truly convinced herself that he didn't really have anything to do with it, then unless she's simply unable to think it through, she must conclude that he's a liar and a braggart. Yet whether liar and braggart, or architect of global terrorism, either way she felt he was a great enough role model to reshape her life around.

It's completely moot whether I tolerate stupidity of the kind exhibited by this woman. Because the universe doesn't. But if there is a karmic balance, then I hope that if she gets out of this alive somehow, she remembers this experience before the next time she decides to tell the world how wonderful it is that Taliban and Al-Qaeda jihadists are killing Westerners. Frankly, I find it rather hard to have any sympathy for her whatsoever.

I've always been a realist about things like this. She basically decided that Western civilization was her enemy, and that the jihadists, as enemies of her chosen enemy, must therefore be her friends. She's now learning the hard way that the enemy of her enemy is not necessarily her friend at all. She called for world Muslims to unite in war against the West. If she becomes a casualty of that war, well, she willingly chose and declared her war. It's a lot more than many other people who've died at Muslim hands ever got the chance to do.

There's something else to think on as well. She's expecting the Canadian government to come to her rescue and fork over the ransom. Given her actions and activities over the last few years - there are Canadians like myself who aren't willing to see any money expended on this idiot. Nevertheless, there's the possibility that she was/is in cahoots with her captors - she pretends to have been abducted, they get ransom money - she's helped their cause. She miscalculated and now, 3 months in - the tables have changed and the threats are for real. I will also state that since she's from British Columbia, specifically, Vancouver...it isn't surprising that her grasp of logic, facts and reality are so completely distorted as to resemble those of American Democrats idolizing the Zero.
