On this day in 1877, according to NPR, Thomas J. Crapper patented a flush toilet with a tank and pull chain. (Wikipedia reports that Crapper didn't actually invent the flush toilet; that is apparently credited to Sir John Harington, in 1596, but he did hold a total of nine patents, three of them for improvements to the flush toilet, including the floating ballcock.)
