I was just presented with a bunch of gorgeous close-up shinies from Endeavor, by way of [livejournal.com profile] cymrullewes.  They're too good not to share... so here they are.  Full-rez images are behind the thumbnails.

Extra credit:  Identify what landmass is visible in the second photo.  I'll freely admit I don't recognize it even after looking at Google Earth.

Double credit:  Identify the cyclonic storm in the 12th photo.

Someone said "New Zealand," I think, though I have no clue if that is correct.

Hrm ..... I don't see any patch of the New Zealand coastline thus far that's any more than an approximate match.

I think [livejournal.com profile] fatcook looked it up online, and that was what they said. I assumed given angle and distance, it is going to be somewhat jumbled.
Again, though, I can't swear that's correct.

I too have heard New Zealand for that photo (and live in New Zealand). There's enough cloud cover that I can't be certain it's New Zealand, but the shape is definitely consistent with New Zealand: the northern half of the South Island is in the lower left corner of the photo, Cook Strait in the upper middle of the photo (above Endeavour), and the lower part of the North Island is in the upper right corner of the photo. The bottom left of the photo is about Christchurch, the top left is Golden Bay and Nelson, and the top right goes as far up as the Kapiti Coast and Masterton. Wellington would be pretty much directly covered by the vertical antenna mast of Endeavour. This puts south/north running at about a 30 degree angle from vertical in the photo.

Thanks for the complete and informative answer :)

Are you anywhere in the field of view of that photo? (This applies to [livejournal.com profile] ehintz and [livejournal.com profile] micheinnz too.)

I'm in Wellington (as is [livejournal.com profile] ehintz, more or less), so pretty much covered up by the vertical mast of Endeavour. (Wellington is the harbour at the south-west of the North Island, if you're looking somewhere else.)

Not now (too far south) but I grew up in it.

See the sticky-out peninsula at the bottom left there, about on a level with the astronaut's legs? That's Banks Peninsula (named after Joseph Banks, the botanist who travelled with Captain James Cook). The city I grew up in, Christchurch, is on the coast just north of that peninsula.

In fact, if you squint a bit, you can see the greyish city shadow/smog that gives away where Christchurch is.
