This just in:  It seems a Federal judge in San Diego has ordered Microsoft to pay $1.5 billion to Alcatel-Lucent for patent violations involving MP3 technology.  The verdict assessed damages against Microsoft for each Windows PC sold since 2003.  Microsoft, naturally, believes the judgement is "completely unsupported by the law or the facts."

By the looks of it, this legal fight is pretty messy and has a long way to go yet.

What are the chances that the Supremes rule on the validity of software patents in the AT&T v Microsoft case they heard yesterday? That could defang lots of lawsuits that Microsoft is fighting.
