The irony of this is that if this kills Delta, it will be a strike on Delta's traditional roots. They may be HQ'ed in Atlanta these days, but the reason it's called Delta is that's where they grew up: Monroe, Louisiana.
The bitter part of me says that if Delta collapses, it will be a Good Thing for folks trying to get to Atlanta.... there will likely be a bailout, but (hopefully) they'll have to give up some of the bazillion gates they have at Hartsfield... and (really hopefully) they'll go - cheaply - to some folks that (I think) would very much like to be there: Southwest, Jet Blue, Alaska.
But, yeah, as for Katrina: With the levees breached and the pums down, New Orleans has a major problem.... there's no place for all this to drain. They've either got to get some really big f'ing pumps and major engineering in there now, or focus on final evacuation - and abandonment for good - of the city.
