Great that you updated us. Please keep it up. Thank you.

But...

Damnit! I can't play it! I can play other LJ Phone Posts. Not this one. Anyone just hanging around their keyboard, who can tell me why?????????

Are you using Winamp? It played just fine for me.

~~Are you using Winamp? It played just fine for me.

Thank you for trying to help... I don't know what I'm "using." Sorry but I'm nearly 100% computer-info-challenged. :-( When I clicked on it, It came as some sort of file number with '.ogg' after the number.

I've been able to play a number of _other_ LJ Phone Posts easily. All I did was click on them and they came _right_ up [in a little box in the top left hand corner of my screen] and played. Not so with this one.

Could it be that Alaric is using a different phone *something* to transmit his... Different from what the others used? And for some unknown reason, it isn't compatible with my computer [iMac]? [sighhhhh]

It's not an earth-shaking issue, I know. But things like this make me MAD! Computer un-knows, I mean. :-(

Again, thank you.

When it asks what to do with the "ogg" file, just tell it to open it with whatever program you use to play mp3s with.

ogg files are an alternative to mp3 files. For the end user, there's really no difference.

Mmmmmmm.... mp3s. Tech thing to download music to and play, maybe? But if so, I don't have one. :-(

Another question.... Why are Alaric's Phone Posts coming through as "ogg" file things? And 3 other LJ users, whom I've listened to, were not?

I'm not nit-picking. These Net-Unknows are fascinating to me. I like REASONS. :-) There has to be a reason. I like to find it. Even if I don't really understand the 'why' of it.

That's easy enough. If you're using Windows, I highly reccomend WinAmp (http://www.winamp.com). It's free and will play ogg files :)

For Macintosh, there's MacAmp (http://www.mac.org/audio-video/macamp/) which I'm assuming performs similarly to WinAmp.

When you setup phone posting, you can select to either have it post the message as a .wav file or an .ogg file. The advantage to the .ogg file is that it takes up a lot less space and is quicker to download than a .wav file.

Here's a good example. A .wav file of a favorite song of mine is around 50-60 megabytes. An .ogg or .mp3 of that very same song is around 5-6 megabytes. I don't fully understand it myself beyond the whole "Well, the file is smaller" part, and I'd like to think I have a fairly good grasp on techie things.

Have iMac. So, I'd have to download WinAmp, I suppose..... All I do know i have, is iTunes and that's not doing it.

Ahhhhh, I was right! By simple deduction/common sense! It has to do with something the person [who is making the Phone Post] does. Well, it doesn't help me hear his Phone Post. But I do LOVE getting to the [semi] bottom of a mystery!!! And thank you much, for helping me do it.

I love the way geeks are willing to be helpful on the Net! And don't make we *info challenged* people feel silly. Even if we don't always "get it," a lot of you are willing to try to teach us. :-)

I don't know if iTunes can play ogg files. A quick search reveals that there is a plugin (http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20021103065300430) for iTunes that will let it play .ogg files. I'm kind of shooting in the dark here as it's been a long time since I used a Mac. Last time I used one, it was an LC II running OS 7.

Capsule summary on that: .WAV is raw uncompressed digital audio, while MP3 or Ogg Vorbis encode the raw sound data, dropping some minor details that the human ear overlooks anyway, in a way that results in typically from 10:1 to 20:1 compression. For a given file size, Ogg Vorbis sounds slightly better than MP3, plus Ogg is not subject to the Frauenhofer MPEG patents.

All I knew I had, was iTunes. And I had it go there. But, I can't find it there. :-(

One of the sad stories of my Net Life... losing files. :-(

That's okay. You can just re-download the file by clicking on the link that says "Phone Post"
