As of about 1530 today, I no longer have a cast on my left foot.  I still have all the pins; the four pins in the small toes come out in another two weeks, the pins in the big toe will stay in another two to three weeks after that.  I have clearance to wash it, carefully, so after we got home I got out the hospital-issue pre-surgery antibacterial wash and scrubbed all the dead skin and dried blood and general gorp off of my foot.

I also have clearance to put some, but not full, weight on it; however, that's pretty much going to have to wait until I can figure out something to use to fill the inch of empty space under my heel in the post-surgical boot they gave me.  A block of fairly soft rubber or dense sponge rubber or high-density foam ought to do the trick; the only problem is, I don't know where to find such a thing around here.

Everything looks a bit misshapen right now, and my big toe is really really short compared to the other one, but the small toes are straight and look like they'll work out OK.  Even after straightening, the little toe is still twisted axially, but now it's no longer curled underneath the toe next to it as well.  I can see my toenails again!  (Sounds like a small thing, but it means I can see what I'm doing to clip my own toenails, instead of doing it by feel or asking [livejournal.com profile] cymrullewes to do it for me.)

In other news, whitestar has a new disk and is alive again, though I'm having difficulty getting it patched up to date because Windows Update is, itself, broken.  It started out by refusing to properly install patches, and at this point it can't even download them.  Fortunately, it is possible to download and install the updates manually without having to rely on asshat Windows Update.  With true Microsoft stupidity, you can search for patches and sort the results by date, by title, or by popularity, but not by severity.

Is there anyplace that does upholstery or furniture repair?

Congratulations on getting the cast off and getting to wash your foot, and good luck with the rest of the healing process!

Heh. He just got a Sun monitor in the mail and now has an abundance of different high density foams to choose from.

And one of the sheets of rigid foam turned out to be perfect for the job at hand. I can now walk (cane-assisted) in the post-surgical boot as well. It's slightly higher than the right shoe, but little enough I can live with it, and if it turns out to be a problem there's thinner sheets of the same foam that I'll bet I can make an extra insert from for my right shoe.

Welcome back to the land of the bipedal.

Good luck with the Windoze^H^H^Hows box.

After downloading and manually installing two dozen or so selected patches, Windows Update is now working properly again and whitestar is fully patched up to date.

I'm only partially bipedal as yet, though. I'm allowed to put limited weight on it, but it's enought hat I can get around the house with just a cane and a night splint. I still need the post-surgical boot if we leave the house.

You're the bicyclist from Starport (http://www.thestarport.org)? About my height with glasses and reddish hair?
