So you'll never guess what I discovered this morning while changing the dressing on the abscess in my toe .... took off the bandage and the gauze sponges, pulled out the iodoform packing, spotted something else yellowish at the bottom of the wound, and thought, "Oh, I got a loose snippet of packing in there somewhere." Picked it out with a Kelly hemostat and .... gee, it wasn't a stray snippet of packing, it was a chip of bone, roughly a diagonal half of a quarter-inch square.
Hey, sure, that could account for the abscess, if it's been in there trying to work its way out and sawing at the tissue. Could well account for a lot of the pain, too....
